Research in disease aetiology has shifted towards investigating genetic causes.
Genetic epidemiology has permitted identification of genes affecting people’s susceptibility to disease.
Advancements in the field of genetics facilitate the identification of genes that may increasing the susceptibility to non-communicable diseases.
Demographic and epidemiological transitions result in increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases like diabetes and CVD. Findings about susceptibility genes in these diseases, in the context of a population, may help in identification of individuals prone to develop disease.
